data

Instead of starting with an existing (form, element, material etc.), going forward I want to begin with data through survey responses (words, illustrations etc.).

The survey will engage with recipients to interact with the topic of child educational development. It will be conducted online. Like an open form cloud, people can log in their response at their free will.

The results of the data, will be use to create iteration forms and extract a modular geometry from.

A series of iterations including sketch, collage, photograph and film using the data, should reveal forms that can be further develop into an organic system.

form &

material

The 2D extract geometries can be further developed into 3d forms that creates an organic material, specific to the modules and responding to qualities of adaptability, changeability, scalability and flexibility.

fractal system

The extracted geometry as a module and material can be develop into a pattern and then a system that is interactive and responsive, adapting with people and site.

respond

Digital and physical experiments on random site,, to test effectiveness of adaptability.. Test on interior and exterior spaces and as interior and exterior conditions.

Test on effectiveness on child development, how it engages and encourages response with children.

1. Intention. Agenda. Motivation.

What is your intention for the Research Major Project?

Going forward into the Research Major Project, I intend to use the findings, techniques and process that I have researched and develop in semester one to create a body of work that explores the next step.  In semester one I have explored the design concept through an existing form, then manifesting it with experiments and concept in order to develop a spatial experience. Going into the Research Major Project, I look forwarding to recreating this process with not an existing form, but a data-based subject in order to create the form. It will be a speculative prospect for the future of residential, that challenges the notion of a home. Re-creating interior domestic experience that is interactive and responsive to the users.

What is your research question?

Can we adapt to our ever-changing environment while maintaining the ever-lasting?

How does modularity inform the temporary eternity experience?

2. Context

Identify the social, cultural, theoretical, environmental, technological, institutional setting for the project.

Home to Sustain Growth and Development

The evolving of humans (children), is influenced by our interior environment, the things we hear, see, touch and feel are what shapes an individual. Therefore, a place like home where children often spend a large amount of time will begin to shape their understanding and the way they grow. Instead of a home with assigned space and functions (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room etc.), a home with an open form approach will free users to engage and shape the spaces they want to live in. A home becomes a source of identity and creativity,

Ever-changing Conditions

To respond to the ever-changing conditions of our world, that is currently led by innovative inventions and technology. As humans we must adapt. Accepting that there are permanent and provisional qualities to the environment we live in. Temporary Eternity will allow living spaces to grow and adapt to humans, to the evolution of humans. Creating interior spaces that response to exterior and human conditions.

Quarantine Period

As we are facing the changes Covid-19, social distancing and being quarantine in our home becomes a temporary or permanent norm. Most students, including children’s learning environments are moved into their home. Especially, during quarantine period, individuals are left with only what is within their home to learn, explore and be occupy with. A home that sustain and accommodates a growing and learning environment will be an important factor during this time, as people are under physical and emotional stress.

3. Site and/or Situation

What is the location or situation for your project?

This project is not site specific because of its adaptable feature. The aim of the results is to be able to adapt to any context, site or situation. However, the project will be tested upon varying context, site and situation.

4. Audience. Occupants. Demographic. User Group

Who will encounter, experience, use, engage the design? Do you have a specific demographic or audience in mind?

Residential residents – with focus on children (growth and change)

5. Stakeholders

Who does the project involve and engage? For example, a particular community, individual, local council, industry, cultural organization. Who will invest? Who will support and attain this project?

The prospect of this project can become a living solution or housing solution. As Temporary Eternity revolves around ideas of adaptable living that often challenges limited space, the design can respond to issues of learning environments, home for renovations or housing projects that accommodates a growing community.

The stakeholders could range from private clients, who seeks a creative space for their family that can be technologically advance and interactive. Or a larger company or government who seeks housing solutions or renovations. When offered as a long term solution, the modules are suitable as it is adaptable to size and needs. When offered as a short term solution, modules can be prefabricated and affordable, saving expense and time in design and construction.

6. Design Approach

How will you approach the next stage of design exploration?

The next stage of this project, would be getting an insight into real-life situations, this will become a strong basis in understanding the issue and needs that my design will need to respond this. I plan to do this by conducting a survey that will engage in people to respond in words and/ or illustration to a certain question. Also, engage with kids to understand the way they play and their ergonomics within an interior setting.

Discuss key strategies and techniques you will use. What are the next steps?

These are the steps of process and techniques that I will undertake for the major project.

Data > Extract > Form and Material > System > Structure and Fabrication (Joinery) > Adapt and Respond

7. Final Presentation

Project forward to your final presentation and imagine what do you want to produce and exhibit?

For the final presentation, I imagine that I would be able to create a unique system that is adaptable and scalable, as an interior, an exterior and an infrastructure. Grow a home / Grow a city

The finals be presented in a range of explorations that lead up to render and video documenting the spatial experience. 1:1 models and installation will be use to bring the experience to life.
