Can we adapt to our ever-changing environment while maintaining the ever-lasting?

How does modularity inform the temporary eternity experience?

Our world is rapidly changing. In a fast-paced technologically driven society, how can we be adaptable, changeable and scalable but still hold on to our character and the character of the spaces around us. This practice-based research explores ideas of ‘Temporary Eternity’ in design, a term I have devised describe the coexistence of states of permanence and the provisional within an approach to the design of spaces.

I explore the theme of ‘Temporary Eternity’ through modular design system in our living spaces. Focus on particularly on child educational growth asking how – responsive modular design can generate ever-changing spaces that inform and respond to the living and learning experiences of children.

My research will draw upon movements and theories that highlight how spaces may be designed to reflect people’s activities and developmental needs. Buildings are shaped by events and maybe conceived as programs which respond to pattern of events. How do we factor in an integrated level of responsiveness and contingency? Through an ongoing series of photographs, collages and models Temporary Eternity explores this systematic adaptability, asking how may interior design apply the approaches of the Metabolism movement which utilizes the concept of the city of living cells, ever-changing needs of the interior residents. Experimental processes captured through film investigate how open form’s collaborative lifestyle is an adaptable solution to our transforming conditions.

Temporary Eternity will push forward ideas of radical modularity in domestic dwellings situate users in the process of creation rather than as passive recipients. This project investigates spaces that can facilitate the permanent and provisional. Design a growing a home, which is an exciting prospect for the future of residential learning environments.
