analogy of play

Analogy of play is an exploration into subjects and materials that inform how adaptive and collective modular space can influence child educational growth, we begin with forms of reminiscence. This series of observations and explorations investigates materials and forms that implies child-like memories and playful reminiscence. These design respond to how the space is molded by the interaction between human and material. Where each material with its unique and temporary eternity quality, are developed into practical and speculative modular configurations.

betweeen human and space

There was a time, not too long ago in evolutionary terms, when our existence was based in our capacity of movement and adaptability; indeed, it is to this that we owe our survival as species. Most cultures now lead a more or less sedentary life, but it could be that flexibility is once again becoming a priority in human development

- (Kronenburg, 2017, p.10).

‘Our bodies are units that are able to transform the environment, human beings are flexible creatures that manipulate objects and operate in a wide range of environment’                                                                                                            - Kronenburg, 2017, p.10).

The relationship between the body and build environment is interrelated in many ways, physically and psychologically. ‘As human beings, our body is a fascinating complex structure, that unlike others are capable of transforming the environment.’ Beginning with the fingers, in the notion that it represents the body. Ten replicas of one form each slightly differ in form and functionality, interconnected by the hand that controls and configures the ten to function variably. The fingers are a nature given modular system, as a part of our body, the finger evolves, from small delicate forms into a mechanism that could move, grip, drag and do almost anything possible. Our sense of touch is an active tool that has taken part in responding and configuring the build environment we live in today. Throughout this project, the configurable finger will be basis in exploring the relation and dialogue between human and material, and human and interior.

With the configurable fingers as a basis in expanding the concept of body and build environment, this exploration brings the modular fingers into the domestic space of a suburban home. The notion that a suburban household necessities are bedrooms, kitchen, toilet, indoor and outdoor space that evolves as the family grow or shrink, allows the configurable hands to perform a role in replacing, assisting or improving the flexibility of the occupant’s lifestyle. The question is, ‘how is mounding the space with our bodies, a constant construction of experiences that forms and re-forms who we are’.

A material that is also reminiscence of child play is a clay. Clay plays an important role as a developmental toy, allowing children to mold anything they can imagine. The form that is molded into is not permanent, as it can be deformed to create a new form. Clay holds qualities of permanence and provisional, as chosen by the user clay can remain permanent or temporary in shape. Clay is adaptable, bendable, moldable to the user's demand, taking on our individual identity (finger print) when each pressure is applied.

Ice and water can be constantly transforming. The state of ice can be solid, liquid or a combination. As solid, ice is in a temporary condition, as it can become liquid when left at an above freezing temperature. Therefore, the ice is constantly in the field of transformation between two states. As a speculative material, ice provoke concepts of 'melting' and 'solidifying' as it comes into contact with the heat of the human body.

The notion of balloons is often associated with kids or celebrations. Kids are fascinated by its inflatable, floating and colorful qualities. However, balloon can be referred to temporary happiness for kids, as its inflatable and floating quality is limited. Balloon can be only be enjoyed for a moment and then it returns to being a subject that cannot be reuse. Long balloons are an interesting materials that allows you to twist and fold an inflatable form into anything you imagine. Each sections becomes a module that together create a provisional structure.
